‘Solley of Sandwich’ (1869–1941): Entrepreneur, politician, farmer, fascist

George Christopher Solley was one of the most prominent personalities in Sandwich during the first four decades of the twentieth century. Businessman, farmer, politician, amateur historian: his influence extended beyond the town into the wider East Kent region and, in relation to some of his activities, on to a national plane.

My biographical sketch of Solley was published in the 2026 edition of Archaeologia Cantiana, the annual publication of the Kent Archaeological Society.

George Cooper: The Smarden Martyr

George Cooper, a farmer in Smarden, became known as the ‘Smarden Martyr', after being sentenced in February 1886 to one-month hard labour for his part in anti-tithe agitation. On this release from Maidstone Gaol, a large demonstration wound its way around the Kentish Weald and 2000 local people contributed towards buying a marble clock (pictured left) in recognition of his stand.
