Hello,

I taught Modern History for 15 years at Canterbury Christ Church University. Previously I held posts at the University of Suffolk and the University of Essex. I also taught at Queen Mary (University of London), Royal Holloway, Birkbeck College, London South Bank University and the Open University.

I have published three books, including my latest book on The Tithe War, which was joint winner of the 2025 Joan Thirsk Memorial Prize,  awarded to ‘the best book in British and Irish rural or agrarian history’. In 2018, I published an acclaimed, critical biography of the French Communist leader, Maurice Thorez.

I speak regularly at local history societies and community organisations in Kent and beyond.

I am a trustee of Brook Rural Museum and Chair of Shepherdswell with Coldred History Society.

I am also a member of the Advisory Council of Kent Archaeological Society.
